Session 22 - Post Session Report

2nd Uktar 1371 DR
Midnight
Amphail Trail, just off the road
Cold foggy night

On the morning of the 29th Marpenoth, having been fully rested and fed the Heroes set out to town on their way to the Garrison. On the way they stopped at the wagon of Otto Hizgarian, the old friend Jasper was telling them about. It was discovered that Ottos was a bit of an oddity and seemed to be a traveling Rasheman Apothecary specializing in these very worms the Heroes have been up against. Otto showed the Heroes his wares but the Heroes passed on the worm products he offered.

The trip to town was uneventful, however now in daylight, the Heroes were able to see for themselves the damage the town had suffered from the unrest over the past few days. The Church of Illmatar was severely damaged and remained boarded up and under Garrison guard by two squads, who were burning bodies out front in the middle of the Vein. In addition to the damage to the front gate of the Three Hills Adventuring Company Compound, the Emporium also suffered damage to include fire and a wall being partially knocked down.

In town, at the Emporium, the Heroes were greeted by Gaspar. Here, after some haggling, they sold Storn’s Owlbear pet to Zalamadra’s henchman. Though Storn had grown fond of the furry little beaked horror, Jasper’s words of wisdom won the day and the decision was made to part ways with the creature. He will be a valuable addition to the Emporium’s "Freak Show".

At the Garrison, the Heroes attended an Executive Council meeting where they were awarded 5,000 gp for the defeat of Nerjul the Black and accepted the modification to their charter and designation as “Agents of The Alliance”. It was also learned at the meeting that Kullen and his gang were made specially appointed deputies of the town constabulary, based on their heroics at the Church of Illmatar. It was also learned that Smenk had turned into a massive worm spawn zombie and was on the loose at large. Kullen and his gang actually took the oath of allegiance to the Alliance at the same time the Heroes did; ironic. Tyree demonstrated his typical Uthgardt Primitive ways and accosted the Governor Mayor with demands concerning the Elk Tribe. Though these were dismissed as babble, they did ignite a huge debate and outbursts from Lt. Skunt and Sheriff Cubin drew Kamist into the debate and allegations and name calling ensued. In the end, the Governor Mayor called for silence and tabled the entire topic to a later 'Executive only' session.

Also in the meeting, Allustan introduced Aedrinar a Sun Elven Warmage of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors from Waterdeep. Aedrinar had been sent to Diamond Lake to join the Three Hills Adventuring Company so that he could offer what assistance the Order could muster in order to get to the bottom of the Cataclysmic set of events harboring the prophesized coming of the Age of Worms.

After the meeting, the Heroes were taken to Sgt. Voss and Sparrow, where even in worm infested death, they remained imprisoned yet still holding hands. Tyree exterminated them with no hesitation, in the process Tyree himself was nearly taken by the worms.

After the meeting Kamist and Mekkela were able to catch up and spend a few moments alone while the others collected the reward and were fitted with Alliance tabards. The Heroes then went for a meeting with Allustan at his tower. On the way, the Heroes stopped at the General Store where Taggin assisted them by providing the two wands that had previously been ordered.

Allustan was waiting for the Heroes and invited them inside and sat them at a very large table. Here, after apologizing for abandoning them at the Blackwall Keep, Allustan revealed what his research had learned so far:

Nether Tome of Trask
"This book is the Nether Tome of Trask and is said to have been written by the god Myrkul himself. This apocalyptic text mentions a name… ‘Kyuss’ and from my research is associated with the prophesized Age of Worms.

Though I have much more research to conduct with this ancient text, I have found quotes within it from another text known as The Way of the Ebon Triade. I heard of this text before and know it as a blasphemous collection of apocalyptic essays, epic poems, and cryptographs that discuss and advent of an era of darkness called the Age of Worms, during which a great Overgod of evil would arise from the ashes of three evil dead gods. This Overgod would bring destruction on a scale never seen before and would mold all the Realms in its own terrible image.

This tome further suggests specifically that the Overgod would form from the essence of three slain gods. I wonder if Myrkul knew of his own imminent demise while writing this text. According to what is written within, this Overgod would be the Harbinger of an Undead Colossus known as Kyuss who would once again stalk the Realms."

At the conclusion of the meeting Allustan asked the Heroes to travel to Waterdeep and meet with an associate of his named Eligos. Allustan handed the Heroes three large scrolls with the notes of his research on this matter and indicated he would pay the Heroes 500gp to travel to Waterdeep to speak to Eligos on his behalf about these happenings and to deliver Allustan’s notes to him. Allustan paid the heroes 200gp each up front and indicated he would pay them an additional 300gp each upon their return.

The Heroes then headed back to Adventuring Company Compound for rest and recovery before departure the next morning. The Heroes had more meetings with Jasper and Otto and learned a number of their potions that they had found amongst the Dragon’s treasure were sabotaged with writhing worms hidden inside the dark murky swirling liquids. Otto also seemed immune to some of the effects of the worms and even showed up to dinner and ate one by chewing it up. Otto also kept a jar full of the worms in his wagon and used them to make protective items such as a paste that warded away worms from penetrating ones skin when applied. He also made from the worms an oil that could be used as a 'bane' verses the worms on weapons.

Also during the day the Heroes battled two worm infested zombies that had been in a house and rescued an infant from the same home. The infant was provided to the Cult of Final Passage with a donation of gold for its upkeep and protection. Hein’s girlfriend Julie gladly accepted the baby and promised to take care of it and raise it as her own. It was discovered at this time that Hein had also joined the Cult of Final Passage but was away on business of Kelemvor.

Late at night on the 29th a large Dire Wolf attacked the Compound and fell Suzanna’s old mare, ‘Lady’. It got away but had jumped through the damaged gate. Tyree rushed out into the night without any light source and soon found himself in total darkness, screaming out into the night, only to be answered by a distant howl.

In the morning, 30th Marpenoth, the Heroes set out for Waterdeep. On the way they were attacked by a very Large and Old Black Dragon who swooped down on them and sprayed the Heroes with acid. It them flew away and did not look back. More than one of the Heroes were ‘shaken’ by the magnificent deadly and evil beast.

The heroes spent the night at the Bargewright Inn and set out on the morning of the 1st of Uktar for Waterdeep. In the evening on the 1st of Uktar the Heroes had made it half the way to Amphil. Here Aedrinar used his 'High Eleven' magic to create a magical shelter to provide cover from the cold and elements for the Heroes.

Just after midnight on the 2nd of Uktar, Storn was on watch alone; all the Heroes deep asleep in their shelter. Then something groaned in the night as it approached. Shambling along the road as if it had been following the Heroes was the massively obese, and disheveled Smenk, as Storn saw and identified Smenk in the night with his dark vision it was about 60’ away and moving toward the encampment. Smenk was obviously seriously infested with worms and was running at Storn hands outstretched with a quizzical look on his face and as he mouthed the words… “BRAINS”…worms crawled out of his mouth…Oh no.

Session 22 - Return of the Heroes

29th Marpenoth, 1371 DR
Morning
Diamond Lake, Company Compound
Cool Morning air, smell of burnt buildings and fires

The comfort of a night’s sleep in your own warm quarters is a welcome change from the past few cold, wet, and horror filled evenings. During this well deserved rest, each of the Heroes can’t help but reflect on the events of the past month. What are these tiny worms? where did they come from? How has it come to this, that these events so closely and uncannily match some of the ranting of the crazy old Jierus and his foaming sermons? Could the prophesized Age of Worms truly be at hand? And how can these worm infested zombies be stopped from spreading?

If it had not been for the effects of near exhaustion these haunting questions would surely keep any mortal man up all night tossing and turning in fearful contemplation. Mercifully, all of the Heroes are able to easily pass into blissful yet haunted sleep. Is the Age of Worms at hand?

The smell of salted pork crisps and fired eggs awakens each of the Heroes to a cool yet comfortable morning. After dressing for the day and meandering downstairs, Jasper, Eldron and Mojdeh are there to great each of you. Jasper encourages each of you to eat a hearty breakfast to prepare you for the coming day. The lovely Mojdeh carefully serves each of the Heroes and lends a gentle smile and a pleasant greeting to each of the Heroes. Jasper indicates that you have been summoned to a mid-morning meeting at the Garrison with the Diamond Lake Council and that Governor Mayor Lenod Neff will be presiding. Jasper encourages all the Heroes to eat up and then head over to the Garrison.

Dolgun is noticeably absent. Jasper indicates that Dolgun volunteered to travel to Waterdeep with a Garrison Ride (mounted patrol) to obtain special supplies ordered by Valkus Dunn. Once in Waterdeep, per Jasper, Dolgun was instructed to remain behind and obtain quarters for the Heroes at the Crooked House Tavern and Inn in the Trades Ward. Jasper indicated that per Allustan the Heroes would be asked to travel to Waterdeep and seek the assistance of an old friend of Allustan’s.

Also of note is the Rasheman Gypsy wagon the Heroes noticed last night parked just outside the Compound Entrance Gate next to one of the old trees. If asked, Jasper indicates that this wagon belongs to an old friend from his past named Otto Hizgarian. Jasper indicates that Otto has rolled into town recently to sell his wares. Japer tells the Heroes that he put Otto up for the night and that he will be leaving later in the day.

Jasper also needs another dispersement of gold as follows:

Rent 50gp
Basic Expenses 50gp (food, supplies, wine and ale, and other expendables)
Taxes 50gp
Feed for Storn’s pet 5gp (expanding appetite)
Feed for Eldron’s wolf cubs 5gp (growing wolf cubs)
Pay Eldron 25gp
Pay Dolgun 25gp
Pay Mojdeh 5gp
Jasper’s personal expenses 5gp
Special Repairs to the front gate and gate wall support 200gp

Total 420gp (Jasper indicates these are above normal and that last month expenses were 150gp)

Session 21 - Post Session Report

28th Marpenoth, 1371 DR
Night
Diamond Lake, Company Compound
Cool night air, smell of burnt buildings and fires

After leaving Blackwall Keep the Heroes made good time to the Bargewright Inn, located at the intersection of the Amphil Trail, the Cairn Road, and the Dessarin River. The Bargewright Inn is a community of about 35 folk and is an important base for travelers in the North. It was formerly a lone wayside Inn on a natural hill overlooking the River Dessarin and the bridge known as Ironford. Persistent bandit attacks made the proprietor, Feston Bargewright, decide to fortify the hill. He looked for someone to share the cost. To this end, he persuaded several Waterdhavian merchants, tired of guild politics and fees, to relocate. They did so, surrounding Feston's Inn and the slopes of the hill with businesses of use to caravan travel. Feston then raised a wall around the place and business prospered. On good summer nights, Bargewright Inn may have a temporary population of close to 750.

Agents of the Lords of Waterdeep and the Harpers both keep sharp eyes on Bargewright Inn, because the Zhentarium have been trying to buy into it for some years. They hope to gain control fo the ford, and eventually the farms that lie to the north of the Inn, on the west bank of the Dessarin. meanwhile the businesses here make Bargewright Inn a haven for travelers in the North.

Key businesses within the Inn included:
The Bargewright Inn
The Sword and Slash
( Weapons Merchant)
Belvyn's House of Good Cheer (Feasthall and Temple, various Faiths)
Shondrin's Packsack of Plenty ("The Sack" General Store)
The Wet Crossing (Tavern)
Rinthar's Wagonworks (Wheelwright)
The Stalls (Ramshackle awnings more of a flea market, mostly produce)
Haeleth's Horseshoes (Smith)
Ruldarr's Pipes, Locks, Tobacco, and fine Furniture
The Healing House (Animal Healer - Physic)

After obtaining a healthy afternoon meal the Heroes bought some supplies and a few odds and ends. Valcrist spotted four members of Nerjul's gang entering the Bargewright Inn. Luckily none of the Heroes were recognized. The Heroes also encountered Markar the cheese merchant here and Alobron bought some scrolls from a Wizard named Mezalorian who appeared to wear the garb (purple cloak with a white hand) of the Watchful Order of Magist and Protectors from Waterdeep.

The Heroes encountered some refugees from Diamond Lake led by Faust, a human Damaran miner. Faust told the Heroes about a terrible chain of events that had happened over the past few days in which some sickness had broken out in the Church of Illmatar that caused people to turn into ravenous crazed zombies. He also described something called gut rot which was spreading through town and causing much misery among the population. Faust also related how Allustan and the Garrison soldiers squashed the zombie incident at the Church, but indicated that he had seen enough and with the disruptions of the Dourstone Mine and Smenk taking it over, Faust and his fellow miners and their families decided it was time to get out of town and seek employment elsewhere perhaps in Waterdeep.

After this the Heroes headed out for Diamond Lake which was a half days walk north along the Cairn Road and then a short northeast walk on the Company Road along Diamond Lake into the city proper.

Along the way, the Heroes encountered a pack of worm Spawn zombies feeding on a group of refugees. The Heroes easily dispatched them with the help of Egwaine, but not before Tyree found himself surrounded and infested by two worms that had to be cut out before they burrowed into his brain. Ouch!

Later at Sunset the Heroes encountered an old farmer named Markus who indicated his family had been kidnapped by Nerjul the Black. Markus indicated he was to pay Nerjul his livestock in ransom or his family consisting of his wife Nana and his granddaughter Amy would be killed. The Heroes could not help but help the old farmer and set out to rescue Markus' family and once and for all kill or capture Nerjul.

They found Nerjul on an old Djinn ruin just northwest along the Cairn Road and infiltrated his camp set amongst some Stones of Maglar. In a quick epic battle the Heroes defeated Nerjul and his band of some 85 henchmen. Amongst them were two Cultists that had a worm spawn zombie subdued. Storn made quick work of that situation by slaying one of the Cultist and freeing the worm ridden zombie. Surprisingly Storn stood his ground and fought the vile beast. Alobron and Tyree slayed Nerjul and his command group, and Egwaine used her necklace to manipulate the Stones of Maglar and unleashed a terrible blast of fire form the stones that killed poor little old Nana and most of Nerjul's mooks. The resat of the battle was academic and in the end the Heroes were victorious. Tyree severed Nerjul's head as a trophy (disgusting).

After gathering up treasure, the heroes returned Amy to Markus and helped bury Nana. Markus was eternally grateful and sang the praise of the Three Hills Adventuring Company.

Later that night the Heroes arrived back at the compound and found it had been under zombie siege. Jasper and Eldron related how they and Dogun beat back the zombies using fire and other means. Jasper then cooked a late night meal for the Heroes and advised they should report to the Garrison immediately in the morning. Dolgun was too drunk to talk to the heroes and was slumbering away in his room.

Jasper indicated that in the morning he would have an itemized list of expenses, salaries, and repairs that would require disbursements of gold for the end of the month.

Nice job Heroes.

Mid-Morning
Blackwall Keep
Cool, Marpenoth morning, slight fog from the Stump Bog

As the Heroes set out from Blackwall Keep, more than one of the Heroes cast a wary eye back into the Stump Bog and can't help but wonder of the lurking danger that now inhabits this dark and murky place...a perfect breeding ground for this growing evil...More than one of the Heroes wonders if they just might be back here sometime in the future, battling an even greater danger...no time to think...Marzena needs an escort back to Diamond Lake.
